CLT

CLT

Cystolithotripsy is performed using an endoscope passed through the urinary passage to reach the bladder. The stone is fragmented using an appropriate energy source and the fragments are removed or washed out.

Common Symptoms

Bladder or lower abdominal discomfort; painful urination; urinary frequency; interrupted urine flow; blood in urine.

Causes of CLT

Bladder stones may develop from urinary stasis, incomplete bladder emptying, foreign material or concentrated urine.

Risk Factors

Urinary obstruction; enlarged prostate; neurogenic bladder; recurrent urinary infection; urinary tract abnormalities.

Diagnosis

Urine tests; ultrasound; X-ray or CT when indicated; assessment of bladder emptying.

Treatment Options

Endoscopic cystolithotripsy; other stone procedures selected according to stone size and cause.

Benefits of Treatment

No external incision in the usual endoscopic approach; direct stone treatment; assessment of the urinary passage during the procedure.

Recovery & Aftercare

Recovery is generally short, although temporary burning, frequency or blood in urine may occur.

Prevention

Treat the underlying cause of bladder stone formation; maintain hydration; manage urinary obstruction when present.

Possible Complications

Infection; bleeding; temporary urinary symptoms; urethral or bladder injury, which is uncommon.
