VIU

VIU

During VIU, an endoscope is passed through the urinary passage and the scar tissue causing the narrowing is carefully opened. The choice of treatment depends on stricture location, length, severity and previous treatment.

Common Symptoms

Weak urine stream; straining to urinate; spraying or splitting of stream; recurrent urinary infection; incomplete bladder emptying.

Causes of VIU

Urethral stricture results from scar formation that narrows the urethral passage.

Risk Factors

Previous instrumentation or catheterization; infection; trauma; inflammatory conditions; previous urethral surgery.

Diagnosis

Urine tests; uroflowmetry; post-void residual urine; urethrography or urethroscopy when required.

Treatment Options

VIU; urethral dilation; urethroplasty for selected recurrent or complex strictures.

Benefits of Treatment

Endoscopic approach; short procedure in suitable cases; can improve urinary flow.

Recovery & Aftercare

A catheter may remain temporarily. Recurrence is possible, particularly with some stricture types, so follow-up is important.

Prevention

Prompt treatment of urinary infections; careful use of urethral instrumentation; follow-up after previous stricture treatment.

Possible Complications

Bleeding; infection; recurrence of stricture; urinary symptoms; rare urethral complications.
