LASER URSL

LASER URSL

Laser URSL, or Ureteroscopic Lithotripsy, is a minimally invasive procedure in which a thin ureteroscope is passed through the urinary passage to reach a ureteric stone.

Laser energy is used to fragment the stone and the fragments may be removed or allowed to pass naturally depending on their size and the clinical situation.

Common Symptoms

  • Colicky side or abdominal pain
  • Blood in urine
  • Burning urination
  • Urgency or frequency
  • Nausea or vomiting

Causes of LASER URSL

Ureteric stones usually originate in the kidney and migrate into the ureter. They form from crystallized minerals and salts in concentrated urine.

Risk Factors

  • Previous stones
  • Low fluid intake
  • Family history
  • Dietary and metabolic factors

Diagnosis

  • Urine testing
  • Blood tests when indicated
  • Ultrasound or X-ray where appropriate
  • CT scan when detailed stone localization is required

Treatment Options

  • Observation for selected small stones
  • Medical expulsive treatment in selected patients
  • URSL with laser lithotripsy
  • Other stone procedures depending on stone size and location

Benefits of Treatment

  • Minimally invasive
  • Direct visualization of the stone
  • Precise laser fragmentation
  • Useful for many ureteric stones

Recovery & Aftercare

Most patients recover quickly, although temporary urinary frequency, burning or mild blood in urine can occur. A ureteric stent may be placed temporarily when clinically required.

Prevention

  • Maintain adequate hydration
  • Follow stone-specific dietary advice
  • Manage metabolic risk factors
  • Attend follow-up after recurrent stones

Possible Complications

  • Urinary infection
  • Temporary bleeding or discomfort
  • Residual fragments
  • Ureteric injury or stricture, which is uncommon

When Should You Consult a Doctor?

Seek urological care for persistent stone pain, obstruction, fever, blood in urine or a ureteric stone that is unlikely to pass spontaneously.
