TURP

TURP

TURP removes obstructing prostate tissue through an instrument passed through the urinary passage. It can improve urine flow and bladder emptying in appropriately selected patients.

Common Symptoms

Weak urine stream; difficulty starting urination; frequent urination; urgency; night-time urination; incomplete emptying; urinary retention.

Causes of TURP

Benign prostatic enlargement can narrow the urinary channel and obstruct urine flow.

Risk Factors

Increasing age; prostate enlargement; urinary retention; bladder changes related to longstanding obstruction.

Diagnosis

History and examination; urine tests; prostate assessment; PSA when appropriate; ultrasound and flow or residual urine assessment when indicated.

Treatment Options

Medicines; minimally invasive procedures; TURP or other prostate procedures based on prostate size, symptoms and patient factors.

Benefits of Treatment

Can improve urine flow; relieves obstruction; may reduce symptoms and complications related to chronic urinary retention.

Recovery & Aftercare

A catheter is commonly used temporarily. Recovery and return to normal activity depend on the individual procedure and medical condition.

Prevention

Regular follow-up; medication adherence when prescribed; healthy fluid and bladder habits; evaluation of persistent symptoms.

Possible Complications

Bleeding; infection; temporary urinary urgency; urethral stricture or bladder-neck narrowing; retrograde ejaculation; other uncommon complications.
